Futsal is a variant of association football, played on a smaller field and primarily indoors. It can be considered a five-a-side football version. Its name originates from the Portuguese term "futebol de salão", meaning "hall football". Originating in Brazil and Uruguay during the 1930s and 1940s.

Futsal is a game played between two teams of five players each, with one player serving as the goalkeeper. Unrestricted substitutions are allowed. Unlike other forms of indoor football, futsal is played on a hard court surface with lines; there are no walls or boards. Additionally, futsal uses a smaller ball with reduced bounce to suit the pitch's surface. The combination of surface, ball, and rules emphasizes improvisation, creativity, technique, ball control, and passing within tight spaces.
